CHOAIDS: 2017 Year-End Report

We are happy to report, in 2017 your financial contributions and fundraising efforts helped us raise $97,963. The graph on the right provides an overview of what this money helped us accomplish for our children. We thank God for your help and trust that you will continue to assist us in meeting the needs of our children in 2018.

In April, two South Carolina filmmakers, brothers Geno and Dominic DiMaria, traveled to Haiti to produce a promotion video of our work with the children. If you have not yet viewed this compelling film, please go to our website main page to watch it. Please help us get the word to you friends and family, about the fine work we are doing, on behalf of our blessed children in Haiti. “In Haiti – CHOAIDS” was premiered at our fundraiser in June. The event was hosted by our Advisory Committee Chair John Hill, at the James Island Christian Church. We raised $4,000 in ticket sales, donations, and a silent auction.

We welcome four new children to the CHOAIDS family: Kervens Dominique (7), came in April; Guerline Pierre (17), came in May, but returned to her family in August; Edison Ceceron (9 months) in June; and Oscar Prevalus (7) in December. As you know, a number of the children who come to us are abandoned. They often come without any clothes and other necessary items. For instance, Kervens came to us with just the clothes on his back! In addition to getting him into school, we had to purchase him clothing as well. Likewise, among the aforementioned children, Edison and Guerline have been the most challenging. Edison come to us with a persistent ear infection, and Guerline suffered from emotional issues, and could not be controlled. When she turned 18, she opted to leave CHOAIDS, and we were powerless but to comply with her wishes.

We are most thankful to have gained six sponsors for seven of our 24 children this year - Kervens Dominque, Edison Ceceron, Valentina Bastien, Wilka Leblanc, Anaika Bruno, Angela Lartigue, and Cassandra Francois. Each of these sponsors contribute $650/year toward their care. We pray that God will “nudge” others to do the same with the remainder of our other 17 children.

This year, we added two new staff members and terminated one. Marilene Germain, a mother of three, who worked in the pharmacy at Grace Children’s, assisting HIV+ patients with their ARV medications. She came on board in June to care for baby Edison, and she has done a good job caring for his needs. We trust that she will continue to provide the best care possible for sweet Edison, as well as many of his brothers and sisters. Bony Casimir, Nansie’s brother has been cutting our boys’ hair for at least 10 months, we hired him as the children’s barber since June. The boys feel like the haircut they receive from him better than that of Fanfan (lol!). Unfortunately, we had to terminate the employment of Bine Pierre-Louis. She was hired in 2016, because of our promise to improving the lives of HIV+ women. Unfortunately, she became complacent and neglected the children in her care on many occasions.

In November, the MUSC Dental Christian Fellowship (DCF) group and their faculty mentor, Dr. Bill Sasser, Charleston, S.C., provided much needed dental care to our children. This experience was very exciting for all our children, and several staff members, as traveled by ferry to La Gonave Island, near Port-au-Prince. The MUSC DCF team most graciously provided dental care to all of our children and five of our staff. One child even had 10 baby teeth extracted while others “enjoyed” cleanings, fillings, and extractions. It is your financial support that made this very important trip possible!

Long-time volunteer taking a break from our advisory committee Since 2013, Corinne Hale has blessed us with her passionate support, also helping with our website and social media and the expat community through her many trips to Haiti. Rightly so, Corinne has decided to take some time off, to raise a family. We are, therefore, in need of someone to assist us in keeping YOU updated as to the happenings at CHOAIDS. Should you happen to know a qualified and passionate person who possesses excellent writing skills and media savvy, please send him or her our way. Those with talents and a passion in public health and health communications with an emphasis in nonprofit management would be greatly appreciated.

Important ways you can help CHOAIDS in 2018:

  • Become a child sponsor! Last year, seven of our children were sponsored, for their entire annual needs. Your financial support of a monthly payment of $55, or $650 annually would get the job done!

  • Sponsor a child’s school tuition, supplies and school fees * $500 annually.

  • Your contribution of any amount is also appreciated by way of “snail mail” or our secure website – for food, water, rent, education, transportation, our staff’s monthly stipends, and specific projects. Please see form for suggested amounts.

  • Are you handy, or know of a carpenter, or someone who is good with making things, and likes to travel to interesting places? Please consider joining us in Haiti, to help construct sturdy beds, picnic tables and benches, to make our children more comfortable and appreciated!

  • Help us spread the word about CHOAIDS, what we do -  sharing our blog with your church, business, friends, relatives, and others you think may be interested in what we do. Underwrite Marie’s fees and expenses, to an HIV/AIDS and/or missions related conference. We believe attending and presenting our work at these venues will help expand our knowledge, while enhancing improved and new partnerships.

  • Help Marie cover the cost of two trips to Haiti. Since the inception of CHOAIDS, Marie has traveled to Haiti on her own dime. Your support for her expenses would greatly help her spend more time with our children!

  • Field trips for our children: We find that taking our kids on these trips helps expand their horizons, especially of their knowledge of the many wonderful facets of Haiti.

  • Please join our volunteer Advisory Committee: We are in need of a few good people, for our Advisory Committee - In particular, those who possess skills in marketing, excellent writing and verbal, and strategic planning.

Through it all, what many of you have offered had made a HUGE difference in the lives of our children, our staff (support and empowerment), as well as those of us who are delighted to be able to support our children in many capacities. We all must be reminded that our efforts are to further His Kingdom on earth, through our efforts with our exceptional children of CHOAIDS. Someone once said that "the Gift is in the GIVING”, with the knowledge that, through God, we always receive much more than we can ever can give. Knowing this gives us a feeling of great purpose. Who knows – the Edison, Esther, Zachary or the Anaika that we serve might just be the one who will bring Haiti out of the darkness, and into the light of prosperity, hope, and blessed joy?  It is with this promise that we do what we do, and with great joy.  We pray that you will sustain your support, so that we can make the lives of our children even more secure and fulfilling, of course with God’s help!
